What’s so funny ’bout peace, love and letterpress?

As I walk through troubled times…..

So the latest news is, we are heading for a recession. Boooo.

But we do have 27 medals in Beijing. 12 of which are shiny gold. Hip. Hip…..

I was in France last week, trying to watch the olympics - do you know how hard it is to find coverage of nations other than France in France?

We were in the middle of nowhere. With one little corner shop - a 5 minute walk and a Tabac in the street next to it.

No proper milk (we took tea bags with us.).  No marmite. And No HobNobs.

And as if that wasn’t enough, then I didn’t know about anything about our olympic effort, until we manged to get a copy of The Daily Telegraph - the day before our return.

I’ve never seen, so much Judo and Fencing in my life.

Glad to be back in Grey old Sussex. Come on Team GB.

Telesales………Grrrr!!!

Ok. I hate telesales.

They assume you have time to talk to them, and that you want to talk to them, and they are becoming more aggressive.
Maybe it’s the economic climate. Maybe it’s target led sales. Perhaps it’s socitiey in general. I don’t know.
I’ve tried saying, “I don’t think so.”. When they ask, “Is it something you’d be interested in?’.
I’ve tried saying, “No, thank you.”. Still, they don’t go away.
It doesn’t matter how polite you are, they just don’t get the hint.
I know in sales there is the over coming objection rule.
The you need this, you just don’t know it yet rule
But it’s all rubbish.
I’m not objecting because I want a debate.
I’m objecting because I don’t want it.
I’ve got to the point, that if I hear any noise in the background, that suggest it’s a call center,
I just put the phone down before they pick-up.
I have even threatened to charge the calling company for my time; they were so persistent.
They informed me “You can’t do that.”.
I asked them if they were getting paid, so course they said ‘yes’.
“Then I want to get paid too. This is costing me time.”. I replied.
I am a small one person business, if I am not producing work, then I am not earning money.
Telesales…………..Grrrrrrrr.

New website

Another day - at last!!!

I have finally published my website, you can see it here

www.inkonpaper-online.co.uk

I used to have a flash site that I spent months over, but I don’t think it suited what I do, so I’ve spent ages doing this one. I decided to do it myself for several reasons.

1. Webdesign - seemed very expensive to me.

2. I don’t like other people owning the copyright to my stuff.

and

3. I care about my site more than anyone else.

So it’s up and running. It works. You can order stuff. Take a look - constructive comments greatfully received

Begin again.

Ok. It’s been awhile, since my last post.

Time ran away, and left me standing.

So let me introduce myself and begin again.
My name is Simon. I run a company called Ink on Paper.

The question I get asked the most is, what do you actually do?
I used to say I was a graphic designer; and people would nod, with understanding. It was a common denominator. A phrase I would use, and they would understand and not question, but for me, it never felt right. Every time the words left my lips, they would cause me to wince, it was like wearing a pair of shoes that look great, but rub, and rub until your red raw, and you have to admit, that you can’t wear them anymore.
Spending my days hitting a keyboard, while sitting in front of a computer screen, manipulating images in photoshop was, and is not, my idea of design; don’t get me wrong, some people love it, and their great at it; they can do things that I can’t, and that’s their thing, but for me it is, and was frustrating, because it doesn’t feel connected. Pushing pixels around a screen, paper that never touches human hand, computers that decide the colour everything is going to be. It just doesn’t seem right to me.
So what do I actually do?
My girlfriend tells me, I would be right at home in the 1930’s. I don’t tell her, but I think she’s right. See I love setting metal type, by hand. I love cutting lino, to create images that I can print. I love the smell of the ink, the clunk and thud of my 1930’s platen.
If people ask me what I do these days, I say I’m a printer, which I am. Not because I don’t care about design, because I do, but because for me, there has to be a physical end product. You see Gutenburg, was a printer. William Blake was a printer. The Grosvenor School of art, they were all printers.  Almost every person, we hold dear today for their graphic design achievements, were printers to some degree or other. They had to be, because they had to understand the process. They had to get their hands dirty. And that’s what, I like to think I do, in my own small way.
So here it is, here’s what I do.
I create print, and I do it with love, patience, time and skill. I use traditional techniques, that have been used for hundreds of years. Yes, I can use a computer to design it, but I can also use a pencil and a piece of paper. I can cut a piece of lino, or a piece of wood, and I use metal type, and I use it all to create print.
Yes, I’m a printer, and I create print with character, substance and beauty.
